Donald Trump invites Vladimir Putin to the White House amid poisoning row

WASHINGTON(BBC ASIA) An aide to the Russian President said today that his US counterpart extended an invitation to Washington when the leaders spoke on the phone last month.

Trump and Putin had a chat on March 20 in when The Donald congratulated him on winning the Russian presidential election two days earlier.

Both the White House and the Kremlin said at the time the two presidents discussed meeting in person.

Trump specifically invited Putin to the White House during the call, Putin aide Yuri Ushakov told Russian news agencies Monday.

But the governments didn’t have time to begin making arrangements before the United States joined Britain and more than two dozen allies in sanctioning Russia over the nerve-agent poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury.

Ushakov said:“When our presidents spoke on the phone, Trump suggested having the meeting in Washington at the White House.

“This is quite an interesting, positive idea.

“It was Trump himself who proposed holding the meeting but after that, a new breakdown in our bilateral ties has taken place, the diplomats have been expelled.”

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed that Trump invited Putin to Washington during the call, but said the White House was among “a number of potential venues” the two leaders discussed for a bilateral meeting.

She said: “As the President himself confirmed on March 20, hours after his last call with President Putin, the two had discussed a bilateral meeting in the ‘not-too-distant future’ at a number of potential venues, including the White House.”

She added that the administration had no further comment on the matter.
